About Haukland strand
Haukland beach lies on the north coast of the island of Vestvågøy, about 12 km from Leknes, in a bay surrounded by green mountains. It has fine white sand and light-green water that on sunny days looks like a tropical beach, although the temperature is usually cold even in summer.
The beach has a grass area, restrooms and picnic facilities, and locals use it for walking, playing and, on warmer days, swimming. The road follows the edge of the bay to the neighboring beach Vik and via a short tunnel to Uttakleiv, another beach with rounded stones, known for sunset and aurora photos.
Between the two, the Mannen mountain trail, about 400 metres, climbs in roughly an hour up the slope and shows both bays from above, with the sea and the opposite mountains. A dirt path, closed to cars, skirts the mountain along the coast between Haukland and Uttakleiv.
In summer, under the midnight sun from late May to mid-July, the beach often receives visitors at night. In winter the sand is covered by snow, and from September to March the aurora borealis often appears over the bay on clear nights.
