About Hamnøy
Hamnøy is one of the oldest fishing villages in western Lofoten, on a small islet at the entrance to the Reinefjord, about 5 km from Reine. The E10 road runs over it on bridges, and from Hamnøy bridge you see the scene that appears in many photographs of the archipelago: red rorbuer on the rocks, by the water, with Olstinden peak and the Reine mountains in the background.
The old rorbuer have been renovated and operate as accommodations, and there are cod drying racks on the rocks between February and June. The village is small, with a fish restaurant, a quay and few houses, and can be walked through in half an hour.
Hamnøy sits among the beaches and hikes of the west. Beside it, on the islet of Sakrisøy, there are more rorbuer, yellow ones, and a café. On the other side of the fjord, boats take you to the village of Vindstad and Bunes beach, only accessible by boat and trail.
In winter, with snow on the mountains and low light at midday, the landscape changes, and clear nights from September to March often bring the northern lights over the peaks.
