About Å i Lofoten
Å is the last village on road E10, at the southern tip of the island of Moskenesøya, about 10 km from Reine. The name, a single letter, means 'stream' in Norwegian. The whole village, with rorbuer, warehouses, houses and quays, operates as the Norsk Fiskeværsmuseum, the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, and shows how life was in a fishing port in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The museum includes the merchant's house, the forge, the boathouse, the cod liver oil factory and the fishermen's rorbuer. Next door, the dried cod museum, the Tørrfiskmuseum, usually opens in summer and explains the skrei fishery, the drying on racks and the export of the fish to Italy and other countries. The old bakery, with a wood-fired oven, makes breads and cinnamon buns.
From the end of the road, a short trail leads to the rocks at the tip, with views of the Moskstraumen, the tidal current between the island and the Mosken skerry, which inspired the whirlpool in Edgar Allan Poe's tale and the Maelstrom legends.
In summer the village receives many visitors; in winter, from September to March, clear nights often bring the aurora borealis over the sea.
