About Loen Skylift
The Loen Skylift is a cable car that departs from the fjord edge in Loen and climbs almost straight up the mountainside to the top of Mount Hoven, at about 1,011 metres. The ascent takes only a few minutes on a steep ramp, and the cabin passes the rock face as the fjord drops further below.
At the top, the Hoven building has a restaurant, a café and a panoramic terrace with views over the Nordfjord, the villages of Loen and Olden, the valleys rising toward the glaciers and, on clear days, the mountains of the Jostedalsbreen plateau. Platforms and paths lead to viewpoints around the summit.
From Hoven marked trails run across the plateau for short or longer hikes, and there is a descent trail back to Loen that takes several hours. The Via Ferrata Loen, with steel cables and fixed ladders on the rock, climbs the slope and is done with a guide, in groups, during the summer.
The cable car usually operates most of the year, with maintenance breaks. In winter the top of Hoven is often snow-covered, and strong winds can halt operations.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
About 1.5 to 2 hours at the top; half a day if you include a hike or the via ferrata.
Best time
On a clear day, at any time of year. In summer (June to August) the trails on the summit are usually snow-free and the via ferrata operates. In strong winds or fog the cable car may stop or the view may be lost. Check operation before you go.
How to get there
The lower station is on the fjord edge in the centre of Loen, a few minutes' walk from the hotels. From Olden it's about 7 km; from Stryn, 10 km.
Tip
Bring a jacket: it is usually much colder at the top than down at the fjord. If you like walking, take the cable car up and do one of the plateau trails before descending.
