How to get there
-
Honningsvåg lufthavn, Valan (HVG) Valan · 4 km
-
Honningsvåg hurtigrutekai 1 km
Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Check before booking. Honningsvåg airport receives small domestic flights, connecting in Tromsø or Hammerfest. Alta airport is about a three-and-a-half-hour drive away. Hurtigruten calls at the port on its northbound and southbound routes.
How many days
One day for the village and the North Cape, with an evening outing in summer. Two days to include Knivskjellodden and Gjesværstappan.
When to go
From mid-May to the end of July the midnight sun usually stays above the horizon. From September to March the Northern Lights often appear on clear nights. From late November to late January is polar night. In winter the road to the cape typically operates with a convoy.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
A car helps, because there are few buses and the attractions are spread out. In summer there are tour buses to the cape, especially on days when Hurtigruten and cruise ships call.
