About Fisketorget

Fisketorget is Bergen's fish market, at the tip of the Vågen bay, between Bryggen and the city centre. There are records of fish trade at this spot since the 13th century, and the outdoor stalls remain there, facing the boats. They sell fresh and smoked salmon, shrimp, king crab, mussels, cod and whale, as well as caviar and ready-to-eat snacks.

Next to the stalls is Mathallen, a glass-covered market with fishmongers and restaurants open year-round. There you can sit and eat, with fish prepared on the spot: Bergen fish soup, grilled salmon, fish and chips and shrimp dishes. In summer, the outdoor stalls set up tables and also serve there.

The market is a hub: from there you can see Bryggen on the other side of the bay, and boats depart for fjord and island tours. The Fløibanen funicular station is 150 metres away. Early in the morning, when the stalls open, you can watch the arrival and cleaning of the fish.

The bustle changes with the season: in summer the outdoor stalls are busy; in winter most trade moves into Mathallen.
