About Moco Museum

The Moco Museum (Modern Contemporary Museum) opened in 2016 in Villa Alsberg, a 1904 house designed by Eduard Cuypers, nephew of Pierre Cuypers, the architect of the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Centraal station. The house was built for a banker and was one of the first private residences on the Museumplein.

It is an independent museum created to bring modern and contemporary art closer to a broader, younger audience. The rooms are small, spread across the floors of the house, and the collection mixes well-known names from pop and street art: Banksy, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Yayoi Kusama are among the artists shown.

Part of the space is dedicated to digital and immersive art, with rooms of light, mirrors and projections. Works from the permanent collection alternate with loans and temporary exhibitions, so the presentation changes throughout the year.

For visitors to the Museumplein, Moco is a quick counterpoint to the large neighboring museums: you can see 20th-century and contemporary art in about an hour and then head to Vondelpark or De Pijp.
