About Merenkurkun saaristo – Saltkaret
The Kvarken archipelago features low islands and ridges of stones formed by the action of ice. The land continues to rise after the retreat of the ancient ice cover, slowly changing the relationship between land and sea. The Finnish area is part of a World Heritage shared with Sweden’s High Coast.
Svedjehamn, on Björkö, offers road access to this landscape. Near the harbour, the Saltkaret tower allows observation of the moraine bands and shallow channels from an elevated position. The Bodvattnet path complements the reading of the relief and the old coastal use sites.
From Vaasa, arrival goes via the Replot bridge and continues to Svedjehamn. Allow a day for travel and the walk, checking seasonal bus services before depending on them. The climb to the tower involves stairs; those who prefer to stay at ground level can choose suitable coastal routes.
