at your own pace.

Porvoo lies east of Helsinki and offers a small-scale historic center to explore. Vanha Porvoo brings together cobbled streets, wooden houses and the red warehouses by the river. The cathedral sits on the slope, while the old town hall marks one of the lower squares.

The main sightseeing is on foot. Alternate walking along the Porvoonjoki bank with the streets that climb to the church, and set aside time for the Porvoo Museum. The Runeberg House adds an interior visit and links the town to its literary tradition.

The town also appears on signs as Borgå, its Swedish name. It works as a day-trip from the capital, but one night allows you to stroll without having to return the same day. The bus is the usual connection; don’t count on a regular rail service to plan your arrival.

Before you go

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

From May to September the weather usually favors walking and the days are long. From December to February it is typically cold with little daylight.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

How many days to stay

One day allows visiting the old town and the cathedral, with the option of one museum. Two nights suit those who want to add the house-museums and explore the surroundings more leisurely.

Which city to stay in

The old-town area favors walking between the river and the cathedral. The commercial center to the south keeps the bus station nearby. Those staying outside these areas should check the walking route or transport to Vanha Porvoo.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.
