About Isla de la Plata

Isla de la Plata is about 40 km from Puerto López, in open sea, and is part of Parque Nacional Machalilla. The name comes from the legend of a silver treasure hidden there; the island has a lighthouse for navigation since the late 19th century.

The island is dry, covered with shrubs and low vegetation, and is home to seabird colonies. On the guided trails, which climb the slopes to viewpoints over the sea, it is common to see blue-footed boobies and Nazca boobies with nests on the ground, as well as frigatebirds, some with the red gular pouch inflated during the breeding season.

After the trail, boats usually stop near the island's shore for snorkeling over coral and rocks, with colorful fish and sea turtles. From June to September, on the way out or back, it is common for boats to stop to watch humpback whales.

The visit is made with an accredited guide, along the marked trails, without touching the animals or leaving the path.
