About Malecón 2000

The Malecón 2000, officially Malecón Simón Bolívar, is Guayaquil's waterfront along the Guayas River. The name comes from the project that restored the old promenade in the late 1990s and transformed about 2.5 km of the riverbank into a public paseo, with gardens, fountains, seating areas, restaurants and viewpoints over the river.

Along the way are some of the city's best-known monuments. The Hemiciclo de la Rotonda commemorates the meeting of Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín in Guayaquil in 1822. The Torre Morisca, a Moorish-style clock tower, sits in front of the center. At the southern tip, the Palacio de Cristal, an iron-and-glass structure that used to be a market, hosts exhibitions.

In the central section are the Malecón gardens, with native plants and shaded areas, and the pier where boats depart for river tours. At the northern end, the Malecón reaches the Las Peñas neighborhood and Cerro Santa Ana.

The Malecón has gates and opening hours, and is where residents stroll in the late afternoon when the heat eases.
