About Catedral Metropolitana de Guayaquil
The Catedral Metropolitana de Guayaquil, officially Catedral de San Pedro, is located on the west side of Parque Seminario, in the city center. On the site where it stands, the old Plaza Mayor, the first church of the city—a wooden one—was erected around 1547 and served as Guayaquil's main church for centuries.
After fires and reconstructions, the current cathedral was built in the 20th century in reinforced concrete, in a neo-Gothic style, with two towers, tall portals and stained-glass windows. Inside, the nave is wide and bright, with altars and religious images.
The white façade, with its pointed towers, together with Parque Seminario forms one of the most recognizable images of downtown Guayaquil.
The cathedral functions as a church, with masses throughout the day; visits are allowed outside of services.
