About Muro de las Lágrimas
The Muro de las Lágrimas is about 5 km west of Puerto Villamil and is one of the few remains of the penal colony that existed on Isla Isabela between 1946 and 1959. The wall, made of stacked lava blocks, is about 100 meters long and 7 meters high, and was built by prisoners, without practical purpose, as punishment.
The name comes from the suffering of the prisoners during its construction, under the sun, carrying lava stones. Today the site is a historic place of the Parque Nacional Galápagos, with panels that tell the story of the colony.
The path to the wall is a flat coastal trail that can be done on foot or by bicycle. Along the route there are turnoffs to small beaches, lagoons, lava tubes, a seaview viewpoint and areas where it is common to find free-ranging giant tortoises and marine iguanas.
Near the wall, a staircase leads up to the Mirador Cerro Orchilla, with views of Puerto Villamil, the coast and the island's volcanoes.
