About Kicker Rock

Kicker Rock, or León Dormido, is what remains of a volcanic cone eroded by the sea, about 6 km off the northwest coast of San Cristóbal. The rock rises some 150 meters above the water and is split by a narrow channel separating two vertical cliffs. Seen from one side it resembles a lying lion; from another, a boot, which gave it the English name.

The boat trip, with a licensed guide, departs from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and usually lasts the full day. The highlight is snorkeling along the cliffs and through the channel, in deep blue water where sea turtles, rays, sea lions, schools of fish and sharks such as the Galápagos shark and sometimes hammerheads are often seen. Frigatebirds, boobies and other seabirds nest on the cliffs.

The tour usually includes stops at a beach, like Cerro Brujo or Puerto Grande, for swimming and walking on white sand. Scuba diving with tanks is also offered there for certified divers.

The open sea can be rough and the water is deep; snorkeling is done with a vest and under guide supervision.
