About Museet Ribes Vikinger

The Museet Ribes Vikinger, "Ribe Viking Museum", tells the town's story based on excavations made beside the river, where the early 8th-century market was found. The objects show trade with Frisia, the Rhine and Scandinavia: glass beads, coins, horn combs, jewelry, tools and remains of craftsmen's workshops.

The exhibition features life-size reconstructions of the Viking market around the year 800, with stalls and a boat, and of a medieval Ribe street around 1500, with the cathedral in the background. There are rooms on the arrival of Christianity, with the missionary Ansgar, and on Ribe's role as the king's port.

The museum is good for understanding the town before walking around the centre and before visiting the Ribe VikingeCenter, which presents Viking life outdoors.
