About Den Fynske Landsby
Den Fynske Landsby, the Funen village, is an open-air museum with rural houses brought from various parts of the island and reassembled in a valley by the river Odense, south of the city. The site shows how life in the Funen countryside looked in the 18th and 19th centuries, when H. C. Andersen was a child.
There are about 25 buildings: half-timbered farms with thatched roofs, the pastor’s house, the school, the smithy, the potter’s workshop, a watermill and a windmill, the poorhouse and an inn. The gardens grow old varieties of plants and vegetables, and the fields and barns keep traditional breeds of cattle, sheep, pigs and horses.
In season, staff dressed as villagers perform period tasks: baking bread, shoeing horses, tending the gardens. In summer an open-air theatre stages plays based on Andersen’s tales. Out of season the museum often opens only partially; check before you go.
