About Castelo de Egeskov (Egeskov Slot)
Egeskov was built in 1554 by Frands Brockenhuus, a noble from Funen, at a time of religious wars when lords protected their houses with water. The red-brick castle, with towers and pointed roofs, stands in a lake up to 5 metres deep, on oak piles; according to tradition, an entire oak forest was needed for the foundations, hence the name "oak forest." It is one of the best-preserved water castles in Europe.
The castle still belongs to a family of counts, who live in part of it. The open rooms display furniture, portraits, hunting trophies and the Titânia dollhouse, a miniature palace. The park has 20 hectares of gardens: the Renaissance garden, the fuchsia garden, the English garden, the herb garden, the water garden and the kitchen garden, plus hedge and bamboo mazes.
In the old halls, museums show vintage cars, motorcycles, airplanes, agricultural machinery and rescue vehicles. There are also treetop walkways and play areas for children. Egeskov is open seasonally, generally from spring to autumn, with events in summer.
