About Galeria Nacional da Dinamarca (Statens Museum for Kunst)

Statens Museum for Kunst, known as SMK, brings together the royal art collections assembled since the 16th century. The historic building was constructed between 1889 and 1896, and a modern glazed wing was added at the end of the 20th century, overlooking Østre Anlæg park. A sculpture gallery links the two parts.

The highlight is Danish Golden Age painting, the first half of the 19th century, with Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, Christen Købke and others who captured the country's light and landscapes. There are also European masters, from Mantegna to Rubens and Rembrandt, and the French collection donated by Johannes Rump in 1928, with works by Matisse, Picasso, Derain and Braque.

Danish and Scandinavian art from the 20th century onwards occupies the new wing. The museum sits next to Rosenborg and the Botanical Garden, and the Østre Anlæg park behind it has lakes and walking paths.
