About Castelo de Rosenborg (Rosenborg Slot)
Rosenborg was built between 1606 and 1624 by order of Cristiano IV, originally as a summer residence outside the city walls. The king liked it so much that he expanded the building several times and died there in 1648. The red-brick and sandstone castle, with towers and a copper roof, is an example of the Dutch Renaissance that Cristiano IV spread through Copenhagen.
The interior has been preserved as the crown museum since the 19th century. The rooms follow a chronological order, from Cristiano IV to Frederico VII, with furniture, tapestries, portraits, porcelain and the monarchs' personal objects. The Knights' Hall, on the top floor, houses the coronation thrones: the king's, made from narwhal tusk, and the queen's, of silver, guarded by three life-size silver lions.
In the basement is the treasury, containing the Danish crown jewels, Cristiano IV's crown of gold and gems, and the royal insignia. The castle sits within Kongens Have, the king's garden, the country's oldest royal garden, with flowerbeds, avenues and lawns where locals picnic in summer.
