About Helligdomsklipperne e o Museu de Arte de Bornholm
Helligdomsklipperne, the "sanctuary cliffs", are granite cliffs that plunge into the sea on Bornholm's northeast coast, with faces over 20 metres high, fissures and caves carved by the waves. In the Middle Ages a spring considered holy attracted pilgrims to the site, giving the cliffs their name.
A trail descends from the top to the water's edge and runs along the rocks, with steps, boardwalks and viewpoints. The best-known rock is the Sorte Gryde, the "black pot", a cave where the sea enters. The coastal trail continues south to Gudhjem, about 1h30 of walking among rocks and woodland.
At the top of the cliffs sits the Bornholms Kunstmuseum, the Museu de Arte de Bornholm, in a building from 1993 expanded in 2003, with a spring that runs along the central corridor to the windows overlooking the sea. The collection brings together paintings by artists connected to the island, from the early 19th century to today, including the Bornholm school of painters such as Oluf Høst and Kræsten Iversen, drawn by the light and the landscape.
