About Råbjerg Mile
Råbjerg Mile is a migrating dune, a large mass of bare sand that the west wind pushes northeast up to 18 metres a year. It formed more than 300 years ago, at a time when drifting dunes covered much of northern Jutland, and is one of two that remain in the region. It covers about 2 km² and rises to 40 metres above sea level.
The dune moves over the surrounding vegetation of heather, pines and mires, leaving behind flat, wet ground. Walking to the top is like entering a small desert, with fine sand rippled by the wind and, from the summit, views over the Kattegat on one side and pine plantations on the other. On windy days, the sand runs across the surface.
The area is protected and open to walking. There is no marked trail on the sand: climb from the windward side, where the slope is gentler. Nearby, on the Kattegat coast, are the beaches of Ålbæk.
