About Museu de Skagen (Skagens Kunstmuseer)
At the end of the 19th century, Skagen attracted Danish and Scandinavian painters who spent summers in the village to paint outdoors the northern light, the fishermen and the beaches. Among them were P. S. Krøyer, Michael Ancher, Laurits Tuxen, Holger Drachmann and Anna Ancher, the only one of the group born in Skagen, daughter of the owner of Hotel Brøndum, where the artists stayed.
The museum was founded in 1908 in the dining room of Hotel Brøndum and acquired its present building, in a central garden, a few years later. The collection brings together the group's best-known paintings, such as Krøyer's scenes on the beach at dusk, in the "blue hour", Michael Ancher's portraits of fishermen and Anna Ancher's light-filled interiors. The hotel's dining room, with the portraits of the artists painted on the walls, was transferred to the museum.
A few minutes' walk away is the house of Michael and Anna Ancher (Anchers Hus), where they lived with their daughter Helga, kept with the furniture, paintings and studio as they were. The house of Holger Drachmann (Drachmanns Hus) is also part of the museum. The three make up the Skagens Kunstmuseer.
