About Utzon Center
Jørn Utzon, the Danish architect of the Sydney Opera House, grew up in Aalborg, where his father ran the shipyard. The Utzon Center was the last building he designed, together with his son Kim Utzon, and was completed in 2008, the year of the architect's death. The complex sits on the edge of the Limfjord, in the old harbor, with curved roofs that evoke sails and boat hulls.
The center tells Utzon's life and work, with models, drawings and the story of the Sydney Opera House, and hosts temporary exhibitions on architecture, design and art. There is an auditorium, a library and a boat hall with vessels he designed. The inner courtyard opens onto the fjord.
The waterfront around it, the Aalborg Havnefront, was transformed into a promenade with bathing areas in the fjord, lawns, cafés and steps down to the water. From the center you can walk to the concert hall Musikkens Hus and to Aalborghus.
