About Lindholm Høje
Lindholm Høje is one of the largest Viking Age burial sites in Scandinavia. It sits on a hill north of the Limfjord, in Nørresundby, facing Aalborg. The sand carried by the wind at the end of the Viking Age covered the site and preserved it until the excavations of the 1950s, which revealed about 700 graves and the remains of a village.
The oldest graves, at the top of the hill, date from the 5th century; the more recent ones, lower down, are from the Viking Age, between the 9th and 11th centuries. Many are marked with stones arranged in circles, triangles or in the shape of boats, the so-called stone ships, one of the best-preserved groups of this type. The stones lie scattered across the grass, with sheep grazing around, and the view reaches the fjord and Aalborg.
The Lindholm Høje museum next door displays objects found in the excavations, reconstructions of the village and of Viking life in the region. One of the most curious discoveries was a ploughed field buried by sand, with the plough marks preserved.
