About Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg

Kunsten is Aalborg's museum of modern and contemporary art. The building, designed by Finnish architects Alvar and Elissa Aalto with Danish Jean-Jacques Baruël, was built between 1968 and 1972 and is Aalto's only work in Denmark. The stepped roofs and curved skylights bring diffuse northern light into the rooms, avoiding direct sunlight on the works.

The collection comprises about 1,500 works, with 20th-century and contemporary Danish art, artists from the CoBrA group such as Asger Jorn, and international names. Temporary exhibitions occupy a large part of the space.

The museum is set in a tree-lined park south of the center, with an amphitheater, terrace and a sculpture park. A nearby hill, Skovbakken, has the observation tower Aalborgtårnet, with views over the city and the fjord.
