About Centro antigo de Aalborg e Jomfru Ane Gade

The old centre of Aalborg grew around the port of Limfjord, which made the city a herring trading centre since the Middle Ages. The cathedral of São Budolfo (Budolfi Kirke), dedicated to the patron saint of sailors, is Gothic, from the late 14th century, with a Baroque tower from 1779, 16th-century frescoes and an altar from 1689.

Near the fjord lies Aalborghus, a half-timbered castle built by Christian III in the mid-16th century for the officials who collected taxes, the only one of its kind left in Denmark. The building houses offices, but the courtyard, the park, the dungeons and the casemates usually open in summer. On Gammeltorv square, Jens Bangs Stenhus, dating from 1624, is a five-storey Renaissance house with a decorated façade, built by the merchant Jens Bang.

Jomfru Ane Gade, a pedestrian street between the centre and the fjord, concentrates restaurants and bars in old houses: by day it has tables on the pavement, and at night it becomes the heart of the city's nightlife. Around it, streets like Hjelmerstald and Algade have houses from the 17th and 18th centuries.
