About Fortín de La Galera

The Fortín de La Galera sits atop a hill at the northern end of the bay of Juan Griego, the fishing town in northwest Margarita, about 30 km from Porlamar. The fort now has low walls, a few cannons and a monument remaining, and the site has become the island's most popular lookout for late afternoon.

In August 1817 the fort was one of the settings of the island's independence, and the resistance of the people of Margarita in those years gave rise to the state's name, Nova Esparta. At the foot of the hill lies the Laguna de los Mártires, a small lagoon beside the bay.

The view is the reason to climb. From the top you can see the semicircular bay of Juan Griego with the fishing boats at anchor, the town's waterfront and, to the west, the open sea where the sun sets. In the late afternoon the hill fills with people, and the stalls and bars around sell juices, beer and snacks.

The town of Juan Griego has a quiet promenade with fish restaurants, and the calm bay is good for swimming. It is one of the few towns on the island with a sunset over the sea.
