About Monte Roraima
The summit is a plateau of about 31 km², mostly in Venezuelan territory, surrounded by cliffs up to 400 meters high. On top, the landscape consists of black rocks carved by wind and rain, pools of clear water, valleys of quartz crystals and plants found nowhere else.
The ascent starts from the pemón community of Paraitepui, southwest of the mountain, and crosses the savanna and the Tek and Kukenán rivers to the base camp at the foot of the cliff. From there, a natural ramp climbs the cliff to the summit. On top, groups sleep in shelters under the rocks, and walks lead to points such as the three-border marker, the Valley of the Crystals and viewpoints over the cliff.
The round trip usually takes about six days, with pemón guides and porters hired through agencies in Santa Elena. The mountain is sacred to the pemón, and there are park rules regarding trash, fires and removing stones and plants.
Weather changes quickly on the summit: fog and rain can arrive at any time, and nights are cold.
