About Ribersborgsstranden e Ribersborgs kallbadhus
Ribersborgsstranden, the Ribersborg beach known as Ribban, stretches about 2.5 km west of Malmö’s center, between Ribersborg park and the sea. The sand is shallow and the water is usually calm, sheltered by breakwaters. In summer the beach fills with families, with volleyball courts, kiosks and grassy areas.
In the middle of the beach, a wooden pier leads to the Ribersborgs kallbadhus, the cold bathhouse built in 1898 on stilts, a few dozen meters from the sand. It is a wooden building painted green and white, with separate areas for men and women and a mixed area. The ritual has been the same for over a hundred years: wood-fired sauna, a plunge into the sea and rest on the decks. Locals attend year-round, including in winter, when the water is near zero degrees Celsius. In the separate areas, bathing is usually nude, as is traditional in Nordic saunas.
From the pier and the decks you can see the Øresund bridge to the south, its 8 km across the sea to the artificial island of Peberholm, where the link continues by tunnel to Denmark. On clear days the Danish coast appears on the horizon. The bridge, opened in 2000, shapes the whole western Malmö shoreline.
The beach and park are free; the bathhouse charges an entrance fee.
