About Ersfjordbotn

Ersfjordbotn is a small village at the head of Ersfjord on the island of Kvaløya, west of Tromsø. The fjord is narrow and surrounded by jagged mountains that rise almost straight from the water, with snow-capped peaks for much of the year. It's one of the most popular spots for Tromsø residents for short drives, about 30 minutes from the centre.

At the head of the fjord, a pale-sand beach with green-blue water welcomes swimmers on the few warm days of summer. A path runs along the shore, and there are benches and picnic areas. The road continues around the other side of the mountain to Kaldfjord and the villages on Kvaløya's outer coast, like Sommarøy, with white-sand beaches.

In winter, being away from city lights and with an open view of the northern sky, Ersfjordbotn is one of the most used spots on aurora-watching tours. The aurora is usually seen from September to March on clear nights, and its reflection in the fjord when the water is calm is one of the images most sought after by photographers.

The village has few services. On winter nights, the road often has snow and ice; driving requires experience.
