About Buarbreen

Buarbreen is a tongue of the Folgefonna glacier, the third largest glacier on mainland Norway, which descends into a narrow valley west of Odda. It is one of the easiest ways to see a glacier up close in the region on a half-day walk.

The trail starts at the Buer farm, about 8 km from Odda centre, along a narrow road. It's roughly 4 km each way, taking 2 to 3 hours round trip. The path follows the river from the glacier, crosses a suspension bridge and climbs over rocks, with steep sections at the end where fixed ropes provide support. Up top the valley closes in front of the glacier front, with blue ice, polished rocks and meltwater waterfalls.

The glacier has retreated significantly in recent decades, and signs along the route show how far it once reached. Do not walk on the ice without a guide: walks on the Folgefonna glacier are run by agencies in Odda and Jondal with proper equipment.

The trail is typically used from June to September. In winter and spring snow and ice make the path slippery.
