About Hardangervidda Natursenter

Hardangervidda Natursenter is the visitor centre for Hardangervidda National Park, the largest mountain plateau in Europe, which stretches east of Eidfjord. It is located in Øvre Eidfjord, about 7 km from the village, at the head of the Måbødalen valley, on the way to Vøringsfossen.

The exhibits explain the plateau’s nature: the glaciers that shaped it, the water that flows down in waterfalls to the fjords, the climate, vegetation and wildlife. The wild reindeer of Hardangervidda, one of the largest herds in Europe, have their own gallery with the history of hunting since prehistoric times. There are also models, freshwater fish aquariums and interactive areas for children.

The highlight is the large-format panoramic film, with aerial images of the plateau, the fjords and the waterfalls through the seasons. The centre has a café and a shop, and serves as an information point for trails in the park and the Eidfjord region.

Nearby, short trails lead to the Eidfjordvatnet lake and to valley farms. On the way, the road passes Sæbø and the stone fields of Øvre Eidfjord.
