About Norsk Fjordsenter
The Norsk Fjordsenter, the Norwegian Fjord Centre, sits on a slope above the village of Geiranger and functions as a museum and visitor centre for the West Norwegian Fjords World Heritage site. The exhibition explains how glaciers carved the valleys and the sea flooded them, and how people lived there over the centuries.
One section shows life on the mountainside farms, such as Skageflå and Knivsflå, where families kept goats and farmed on platforms above the fjord, using stairs and ropes to transport children and animals. Another covers rock avalanches and the waves they create, a central issue for the region, and tourism, which has reached Geiranger since the 19th century with the first ships.
The Storfossen waterfall runs beside the centre, descending to the village. A stone-and-wood stairway, the Fosseråsa, with about 300 steps, follows the waterfall and links the centre to the quay, with viewpoints along the way.
The centre has a café and shop, and serves as an information point for trails and tours in the area.
