About De syv søstrene

The Seven Sisters are a group of seven waterfalls that flow side by side down the rock face on the north shore of the Geirangerfjord, about 6 km from the village. The tallest drop is about 250 meters, and they all fall almost directly into the water in white threads. The local name is De syv søstrene; the cliff is also called Knivsflåfossen after the farm Knivsflå just above.

On the opposite side of the fjord, almost facing them, is the Pretender waterfall, Friaren, which has the shape of a bottle. Legend says he tried to court the seven sisters, unsuccessfully, and took to drinking. Nearby is the Bridal Veil, another thin waterfall that falls over the rock.

The waterfalls are best seen from a boat: the ferry between Geiranger and Hellesylt and the sightseeing cruises that depart from the village pass right in front and usually slow down. From above, the trail to the farm Skageflå, on the other shore, shows the Seven Sisters head-on, about 250 meters above the fjord.

The volume of the falls changes with the season: in late spring and early summer, with the snowmelt, they are usually full; in late summer, some may be weak.

Practical information

Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.

How much time to set aside

Boats pass in front in a few minutes; the trail to Skageflå takes 3 to 4 hours round trip.

Best time

From May to July, when the snowmelt usually fills the seven falls. At the end of summer some may have little water. Boats typically operate from May to September.

How to get there

By the Geiranger–Hellesylt ferry or on the boat tours that depart from the village of Geiranger. The Skageflå trail starts in the village or at the quay where the boat drops hikers.

Tip

On the ferry, sit on the side of the Seven Sisters: on the right when leaving Hellesylt, on the left when leaving Geiranger. If you want the view from above, the Skageflå trail is best.
