About Fjellstua
Fjellstua is the viewpoint on Aksla hill, which sits behind Ålesund's center, at about 190 meters altitude. From there you can see the whole town, spread over the islands Aspøya, Nørvøya and Heissa, with the canals, the Art Nouveau roofs of the center, the harbor and, in the distance, the coastal islands and the peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps.
The most traditional route is the 418-step staircase that starts in the city park, Byparken, near the statue of the Viking Rollo, pointed out as the founder of Normandy and said to have been born in the region. The climb, among trees and landings with benches, takes 15 to 20 minutes. By car, a road climbs the other side up to the parking area at the top.
At the top there is a restaurant and café with a terrace, Fjellstua, and viewing platforms. Trails run along the hill to other viewpoints, such as Kniven, higher up, with views toward the mountains.
At night, the city lit up seen from above is a common stroll for locals, and in summer, with long days, the late-afternoon light stretches over the sea until very late.
