Cities
3 cities in Sardenha in the guide

Cagliari
Capital of Sardinia, on the Gulf of Cagliari, in the south of the island. The city climbs limestone hills up to the Castello, a walled district founded by the Pisans in the 13th century, with the Cattedrale di Santa Maria and the Bastione di Saint Remy. Below are the port, the Basilica of Bonaria and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale. To the east lie the Poetto beach and the Molentargius lagoons, with flamingos. It is a base for visiting Nora and Su Nuraxi di Barumini.

Alghero
Walled city on the northwest coast of Sardenha, known as the little Barcelona: it was settled by Catalans in the 14th century and still preserves a Catalan dialect, bilingual street names and walls over the sea. In the historic center are the Cattedrale di Santa Maria and the bastions. In the surroundings are the Capo Caccia promontory, the Grotta di Nettuno, the nuraghe of Palmavera and, further north, the beach La Pelosa in Stintino.

Olbia
Port city in the northeast of Sardenha, the main gateway to Gallura by airport and ferry. The center has the Basilica di San Simplicio, Romanesque, and the Museo Archeologico, on a small islet beside the old harbor, with remains of Roman ships. Olbia is the base for the Costa Smeralda, including Porto Cervo, and for the Arquipélago de La Maddalena, reached by ferry from Palau and by sightseeing boats in season.
