About Centro histórico de Ennis
Ennis's centre retains the medieval layout of narrow, winding streets that developed around the Franciscan convent on the banks of the Rio Fergus. O'Connell Square, at the heart of the town, has a tall column topped by the statue of Daniel O'Connell, erected in 1865 on the site of the old courthouse where he was declared elected MP for Clare in 1828.
From the square run O'Connell Street, Abbey Street, which leads to the convent, and Parnell Street, with painted fronts, family shops, butchers and bookshops, and narrow alleys called lanes that link the main streets. The Catholic cathedral of São Pedro e São Paulo, from the 19th century, stands on O'Connell Street.
Ennis has a strong tradition of Irish music: several pubs hold sessions almost every night, and the town usually hosts the Fleadh Nua in spring, a festival of traditional music and dance. Shops selling instruments and sheet music can also be found in the streets.
The centre is small and can be covered on foot in about an hour. At night, it's the place to eat and hear music before continuing on to the falésias, the Burren or Shannon Airport.
