About Historic Dockyard Museum

The Historic Dockyard Museum is the museum of the Ilhas Malvinas (Falkland) and occupies the old government dockyard on Ross Road, beside Stanley's harbour. It is run by the Falkland Islands Museum and National Trust, which also cares for historic sites across the islands. The first island museum opened in 1909; after several relocations the collections were brought together at the dockyard.

The rooms show island life: tools from sheep farms, bone toys, a recreated kitchen with a turf stove, crockery and a large mechanical music box from the late 19th century. The maritime section has models, figureheads and objects from sailing ships that rounded Cape Horn, plus a room on fishing, the islands' main economic activity today.

In the natural history displays there are skeletons of marine mammals, taxidermy animals set in a coastal scene and the remains of the warrah, a fox that lived only on the islands and was driven to extinction in the 19th century. The Antarctic connection appears in the Reclus Hut, a 1950s Antarctic refuge hut reconstructed in the yard, and in the Antarctic monument beside the museum.

The museum is the right visit for a windy or rainy day and helps explain the landscape you see on excursions. Opening hours vary between summer and winter; check before you go.
