About Fietsenstalling Stationsplein
Beneath the Stationsplein, the elevated square between Utrecht Centraal station and the Hoog Catharijne shopping centre, is the largest bicycle parking in the world. There are 12,500 bicycle spaces, spread over several levels, with internal cycle lanes that bring the rider close to their spot.
The project is by the firm Ector Hoogstad Architecten. Electronic panels indicate how many free spaces there are in each row, and stairs and access routes link the bike parking directly to the station and the surrounding streets.
Above the square the roof is striking: a 24‑metre‑high canopy, supported on seven pillars, with 49 transparent air cushions. Residents nicknamed the structure Bollendak, the bubble roof.
At rush hour, the flow of cyclists coming and going to catch trains is a spectacle in itself.
