About DOMunder
Utrecht was founded on the site that is now the Domplein. In the 1st century the Romans built the fort of Traiectum there, part of the empire's frontier along the Rhine. The DOMunder takes visitors beneath the square, where the foundations of that fort and layers of more than 2,000 years of history can be seen.
The visit is conducted in a group with a guide, and each person receives a flashlight that triggers audio and light sequences when pointed at the remains. The route passes the Roman remains, goes through the Middle Ages and reaches the storm of 1674, which toppled the cathedral nave and opened up the square.
In the same area the Paleis Lofen operates, another underground visit. It shows the remains of the medieval imperial palace that once lay beneath the Domplein and the Vismarkt, destroyed in a fire in 1253, and focuses on the 12th century when Utrecht received city rights.
The DOMunder is recommended from around age 8. Tickets are sold online or at the Winkel van Utrecht counter, at Domplein 9, with card payment only.
Before you go
Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
Allow about an hour for the DOMunder and confirm the duration when you buy. The Paleis Lofen is a separate visit.
Best time
It works well on rainy days, as it is entirely underground. Book the time in advance on weekends and during Dutch school holidays. Confirm the language of the tour when choosing the time slot.
How to get there
The entrance is on the Domplein, beside the Domtoren, in the historic centre. It's about a 15-minute walk from Utrecht Centraal.
Tip
Payment is by card only. You can combine the DOMunder, the Paleis Lofen and the Domtoren in a combined tour, but check the language, because some combinations are only in Dutch.
