About Kanuku Mountains

The Kanuku mountains rise suddenly from the Rupununi savanna, east and south of Lethem, and dominate the region's landscape. The name means "forest" in the Wapishana language. The highest peak reaches 1,067 meters, while the surrounding savanna lies between 120 and 150 meters above sea level. The Rupununi River, which originates there, separates the Kanuku from east and west.

In 2011 the range became a national protected area, covering about 611,000 hectares. The Kanuku forests shelter more than half of the bird species known in Guyana and about 70% of the country's mammals, including the harpy eagle and the giant otter, and the rivers are home to the pirarucu.

Around the mountains are 21 Makushi and Wapishana communities that use the forest for hunting, fishing and gathering. Many tours leave from Lethem to the foot of the range, with trail walks, swims in streams and birdwatching, guided by village residents.
