About Centre Spatial Guyanais

The Centro Espacial Guianense, known by the acronym CSG, is the launch base for the European Space Agency and for France. It was built by CNES, the French space agency, and the first rocket lifted off from there in 1968. The base occupies a long stretch of coast between Kourou and Sinnamary and it is from there that the European rockets Ariane 6 and Vega are launched.

Its location explains the choice: about 5 degrees north of the equator, the base takes advantage of the Earth's rotation to send satellites into geostationary orbit using less fuel. The sparsely populated coast allows launches both eastward and northward over the sea.

The guided tour is by bus through the main facilities, according to the day's schedule, and usually includes the Ariane 6 launch area and the Jupiter room, where launches are followed. You must reserve at least two days in advance and bring photo ID, and the visit only admits children aged 8 and over. There are tours in Portuguese, subject to availability.

On launch days, the centre opens public viewing sites with prior registration on the base's website. If registration is confirmed, the invitation arrives by email two or three days before the launch and is presented at the entrance along with ID. Dates can change until the last minute; check before you go.
