About Musée Alexandre-Franconie

The Musée Alexandre-Franconie is the departmental museum of French Guiana and occupies the Franconie family mansion, built between 1824 and 1842 facing the Place des Palmistes. The building, a listed historical monument, has a timber frame with bricks between the studs, a U-shaped plan around a small inner garden and the typical verandas of Caiena's creole houses. The family sold it to the local administration in 1885, and the museum was established in 1901.

The collections cover the nature and history of Guiana. There are animals and plants from the forest, minerals and a collection of about 4,000 insects assembled by Father Yves Barbotin. In archaeology, the funerary urns of the Aristé culture, found in Ouanary in eastern Guiana, stand out.

In the history section, the museum holds paintings by Francis Lagrange, the Flag, a convict from the bagne who depicted life in Guiana's prisons. There are also ship models, everyday objects and pieces from the colonial period.

The mansion is small and can be seen in a short time, and fits well into a walking tour of the Place des Palmistes. Opening hours and which rooms are open may change; check before you go.
