About Estación Científica Charles Darwin
The Estación Científica Charles Darwin was established in 1964 by the Charles Darwin Foundation on the east edge of Puerto Ayora to study and protect Galápagos' nature. Beside it is the Fausto Llerena tortoise breeding center of the Galápagos National Park, where young giant tortoises from threatened populations are raised until they are large enough to return to their islands of origin.
The visit follows a trail through dry vegetation of cacti and shrubs, passing pens with adult tortoises from various islands, with dome- or saddle-shaped shells, and nurseries with hatchlings of different ages. Panels explain the differences between species, the threats they faced and the recovery work.
A climate-controlled room houses the preserved body of Solitário George, the last specimen of the Pinta Island tortoise, who died in 2012 and became a symbol of conservation. There are also yellow land iguanas raised in recovery programs.
Along the way is the small Estación beach, and there is an information center. The park center may require prior reservation for the visit; check the rules before you go.
