About Palácio de Fredensborg (Fredensborg Slot)
Fredensborg, the "castle of peace", was built by Frederick IV between 1720 and 1726, shortly after the end of the Great Northern War, and was inaugurated in 1722. The white building, with a central dome, stands on the shore of lago Esrum and is used by the royal family during part of spring and autumn for receptions and state visits.
The baroque park, one of the largest in Denmark, has star-shaped avenues that radiate from the palace and cross the wood. The Vale dos Noruegueses (Nordmandsdalen) brings together about 70 statues of peasants and fishermen from Norway and the Faroe Islands, from the 18th century, arranged in an amphitheatre. The part of the park near the palace is reserved for the royal family, but it usually opens to the public in July.
The palace usually opens for guided tours in July, when the royal family is not in residence; otherwise, the park is enough for a visit, with walks down to the shore of lago Esrum.
