About Jardim Barroco de Frederiksborg (Barokhaven)
The Baroque garden was created in the early 1720s by court gardener Johan Cornelius Krieger for Frederick IV, as terraces rising up the north slope of the castle. It was abandoned in the early 19th century and recreated from the original designs in 1996, under the name Kaskaderne, the cascades.
The layout follows the castle's axis: a water cascade descends the centre, flanked by terraces with box hedges, linden trees clipped into boxes, lawns and beds with royal monograms. From the top of the terraces the view shows the entire castle reflected in the lake, the best-known photograph of Frederiksborg.
The garden is part of the castle park, which continues into an English woodland, the Slotshaven, and the trail around the lake. In summer boats cross the lake between Hillerød's centre and the castle.
