About M/S Museet for Søfart
The M/S Museet for Søfart, the Danish Maritime Museum, opened in 2013 in an unexpected location: an old dry dock of the Helsingør shipyard, 150 metres long and 9 metres deep, just a few metres from Kronborg. To avoid blocking the view of the castle, the architecture firm BIG, led by Bjarke Ingels, built the museum entirely below ground level around the dock, with glass bridges and ramps spanning the void.
The exhibition tells the story of Danish seafaring from the age of tall ships: trade with the Indies, shipping companies, the life of sailors, ports and modern container shipping. There are ship models, navigation instruments, figureheads, sailors’ tattoos and interactive rooms.
The museum occupies part of the old shipyard, and around it are the glass Kulturværftet cultural centre and the port of Helsingør. Viewing the dock from the square above already reveals the architecture.
