The city
Guatapé is a small town in eastern Antioquia, about 80 km from Medellín, on the shore of the Peñol-Guatapé reservoir. The houses in the center are painted in bright colors and decorated with zócalos — raised panels on the facades. About 3 km away is the Piedra del Peñol, a monolith with roughly 700 steps to the viewpoint overlooking the reservoir's islands. It's the most popular day-trip from Medellín.

Guatapé's center, with houses painted in bright colors and facades decorated with zócalos — relief panels showing animals, trades and scenes of local life. The Plaza de los Zócalos and the church are in the middle.
The Peñol-Guatapé reservoir, a large lake of green islands and peninsulas formed in the 1970s. By boat from the malecón you pass the cross of the old town of El Peñol, submerged beneath the water.
