About Monumento a Cristo Rey

Cristo Rey sits atop Cerro Los Cristales, west of Cali, at about 1,440 meters altitude, roughly 400 meters above the city. The statue, made of iron and concrete, is 26 meters tall, of which 5 are the pedestal, and was inaugurated in 1953 to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Thousand Days' War. The hill's name comes from the quartz crystals that once existed on its slopes.

The surroundings were turned into a park, with trails, green areas and six viewpoints, including a terrace building with 360-degree views. From there you can see the whole city spread across the Cauca River valley, the Central Cordillera on the far side and, to the west, the peaks of the Farallones de Cali.

The statue, with arms outstretched, can be seen from many points in the city. Visits are usually made with prior registration on the city hall website and at scheduled times, with a guided route; rules change, so check before you go.
