Dresden
Capital of Saxony, on the banks of the Elbe, Dresden was one of the wealthiest courts in Europe during the Baroque period. Destroyed in the 1945 bombings, it was rebuilt over decades: the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger, the Semperoper and the Residenzschloss were restored, and the state museums display Raphael's Sistine Madonna and the treasure of the Grünes Gewölbe. On the other side of the river, the Neustadt is home to bars and street art.

Bad Schandau
A small spa town (Kurort) on the banks of the Elba, Bad Schandau is the most practical base for exploring the Parque Nacional Suíça Saxônica. From there depart the historic tram of the Kirnitzsch valley, the Schrammsteine trails and the lift to the Ostrau plateau, and the S-Bahn takes you to the Bastei and the Festung Königstein. The Lichtenhainer Wasserfall is at the end of the valley.

Leipzig
The largest city of Saxônia, Leipzig combines music and recent history. Bach worked at the Thomaskirche and the Bach-Museum stands opposite; the Nikolaikirche was the starting point of the 1989 demonstrations, recounted at the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum and the Museum in der Runden Ecke. In the centre are the Altes Rathaus, the Mädlerpassage and the Augustusplatz with the Gewandhaus; outside the centre, the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, Zoo Leipzig, the Spinnerei and Plagwitz.
